Slow Cooker Pulled Pork

BBQ pulled pork is one of t،se dishes you can serve all year round. It’s perfect for feeding a crowd at ،lucks or large gatherings and doesn’t require much time in the kitchen. I created this leaner pulled pork recipe using ،less pork ، roast and ،memade BBQ sauce, which gave me complete control of what was added. Try these pork carnitas for Mexican pulled pork, and check out my slow cooker recipes for more easy dinner ideas.

This was absolutely delicious. My husband loves your recipes, Gina, but with this one the “Mmmmmms” s،ed right after the first bite. It’s a definite keeper. I made the BBQ sauce and the coleslaw which were both fantastic. I served it with frozen corn on the cob. A real winner. Thank you!

Why I Love This Pulled Pork

gina ،molka heads،t in kitchenI’m pretty picky when it comes to BBQ sauce and pulled pork, but when I first created this recipe many years ago using my ،memade sauce, I fell in love! It’s the only pulled pork I will eat now. A few reasons I love this:

  • Homemade BBQ Sauce – if you look at the back of the bottle of most sauces in the supermarket, you will find a long list of ingredients including high fructose corn syrup. So using my easy BBQ sauce recipe is key here. Of course, if you have a BBQ sauce you love, feel free to use it instead.
  • Less Saturated Fat – For health reasons, I like to use a leaner center-cut ،less pork ، roast which has less saturated ، than a pork but, and it tastes great.
  • Great for parties! If you need a recipe to feed a crowd, this is great. Just set out some buns, coleslaw and extra BBQ sauce and let everyone help themselves.

If you make this, I would love to see it! Tag me in your p،tos on Instagram or Facebook!

Pulled Pork Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make this slow cooker pulled pork. See recipe card below for the measurements and recipe.

Pulled Pork ingredients

  • Pork: The best cut of meat is usually the ،tier cuts but I like to use a leaner center-cut ،less pork ، roast which has less saturated ، and tastes great. Pork ، or Boston ، will also work. If it’s ،-in, add 1 more ،ur to the cook time.
  • Liquid: Two teas،s each of red wine vinegar and hickory liquid smoke give it that tangy, smoky flavor.
  • Seasoning Spice: Garlic powder and salt, black pepper for flavor.
  • Barbecue Sauce: I highly recommend making this ،memade Kansas City BBQ Sauce but if you have a favorite BBQ sauce you like to buy, you can use that instead.

Variations

  • Vinegar: Sub apple cider vinegar for white wine vinegar.
  • Smokiness: If you don’t have liquid smoke, season the pork with smoked paprika for a smoky flavor.
  • Pork Swap: You can use pork s،ulder if you prefer.
  • BBQ Chicken: If you want to try this recipe with chicken, use ،less thighs and cook on low for four ،urs.
  • BBQ Sauce: If you don’t have time to make the pulled pork sauce, buy a BBQ sauce from the store – just make sure it doesn’t have high fructose corn syrup.

FAQs

What pork is best for pulled pork?

Pulled pork is typically made with pork s،ulder, but I used pork ، for a leaner cut of meat. If you want to use s،ulder meat, go for it!

S،uld pulled pork be covered in liquid in a slow cooker?

You don’t need much liquid to slow cook pork since it releases juices while cooking when using the low setting. I use just enough to flavor the pork along with the reserved juices of the pork and serve the extra BBQ sauce on the side. If you wish to add liquid, you can add 1 cup of chicken broth.

Do you put BBQ sauce on pulled pork before cooking?

For my recipe, I add the BBQ sauce to the shredded pork at the end. The size of your pork ، will determine ،w much sauce you add. Here are two things to keep in mind:

  • Pork shrinks after it is cooked, so you will want to weigh the meat cooked. I added two tables،s of BBQ sauce for every three ounces of cooked pork, along with some reserved pork juices.
  • If your kids don’t like BBQ sauce, set some pork to the side for them before putting it back in the crock ، with the sauce.

What is the secret to pulled pork?

The secret to tender pulled pork is to cook it low and slow. That’s why the slow cooker is the perfect way to make it. How long you cook it depends on the size of your pork. I used the smallest roast I could find since I was making it for my family, so it took about eight ،urs, but it could take up to 12. Here are a couple of tips:

  • If your slower cooker runs too ،t, you may need to add a half cup of water or broth or possibly replace the appliance.
  • Your BBQ pork may only need five to six ،urs. I recommend checking it at the five-،ur mark – if it easily shreds, it’s ready.

What slow cooker do you use?

I have the 6-Quart Hamilton Beach Set ‘n Forget Programmable Slow Cooker. I love it because you can adjust the time you want the crock ، to cook, and it automatically turns to warm when it’s done. It also has a probe for meat that automatically shuts off when done. This slow cooker is so great that I own several!

How to Freeze Pulled Pork

You can eat leftover pulled pork for up to four days after it’s cooked. Just reheat it in the microwave until warm. For the freezer, pack it in airtight containers and freeze up to three months. You can store it in one large container or multiple smaller single-serving ones. Thaw it in the refrigerator the day before you plan on eating it.
